Chapter 196 – The Hunchbacked Girl.

[Chapter Size: 2200 Words.]

Third Person POV

Kaedwen.

...

...

The night finally seemed to calm down as the screams were no longer so frequent in the city. Despite there still being bonfires all around, everything seemed quiet.

Over the walls and houses, people wearing Akatsuki cloaks ran by, checking while a group of elves guided all the human people from the area.

There were people crying everywhere, mourning what had happened that night as they saw many of their own family members beheaded like animals.

The non-humans watched the people walking as the streets were covered in blood, giving an unfriendly look toward the humans. Worse, they looked with hatred.

But with the people above them, making sure no other human was attacked again—they were still all over the city—and even if the non-humans wanted to kill them with their eyes, they couldn't do anything. After all, who could handle them after seeing them kill all the adult, male non-humans who had been terrorizing the humans in the city?

The mayor was still torn as the people walked in single file through the streets to the city gates. He had bodies all over the city to gather while many wanted retaliation, but at the same time, no one wanted to face those people running and jumping across rooftops.

They came to ask him to do it, but he himself got angry at whoever said that. All of this started with just a rage inside them. There was no threat outside the gates, as there was no sign of the king's men with a great army as the sorcerer had warned.

The mayor was in his thoughts when something fell near him, and he and his men immediately looked in surprise—seeing a head roll to their feet.

"This..." the elf muttered, recognizing it despite the blood and mud on the face.

"It's the sorcerer who gave the wrong information. He tried to take one of ours, but as you can see, he didn't last long," one of the clones commented while standing atop the nearby house where the mayor was watching the humans being sent out.

"I see... it seems they all died in vain," the elf muttered, looking at Madara's dark hood.

"They died for their hatred directed at the humans, just like the humans I killed who had their hatred directed at the non-humans. I follow neither side. I will only act in accordance with the group being oppressed without reason," Madara said.

"You think you're a hero?! You killed my son like an animal!" a dwarf shouted from the other side of the street, clearly full of hatred for all the cloaks atop the houses in the city. They had tried everything to kill them—arrows, traps—but nothing worked and they were all massacred.

"I never said that. Your son was trying to rape a woman after killing her husband in their home, in front of their children. I would have preferred to kill your son in a much worse way, one where he could suffer, but instead, I gave him a quick death to try and calm the city as fast as possible," Madara replied in a heavy tone, staring at the dwarf, who growled but didn't retort, despite wanting to.

"Who are you?" the elf asked again, a question he hadn't satisfied since seeing this group act.

"You can call us Akatsuki. We're a group that will begin acting across the continent. We'll be after human and non-human groups who spread hatred," Madara replied calmly, before leaving the place, leaving the group behind and continuing to check on the people leaving the city.

Something caught his attention as he was passing near the gate. He saw what looked like a girl, judging by the lines of her body, although something seemed quite strange. Madara understood why when she tried to move and stand up.

"Brother..." the voice came out low as she stood awkwardly—not because she was clumsy, but rather hunched—while she seemed desperate. Her voice was distorted, like someone with a nasal defect, which was understandable given that her mouth was also twisted.

"Why are you following us, monster! You should've stayed on the ground and died right there! Our parents were killed, and the one who should've died should've been you! Stay away from me! You're not my sister!" another young man shouted at the hunchback, kicking her as she fell to the ground once again, hitting her face.

"I'm sorry..." she began to murmur.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." she repeated on the ground, and it was obvious she was crying.

"Brother... don't leave me..." she raised her head, but her brother was no longer in sight.

She desperately began to run toward the line, but someone pushed her.

"Go to the back of the village, freak," another woman exclaimed, knocking the hunchback to the ground. She returned to the ground crying.

No one let her move forward in the line, and she ended up falling behind while screaming for her brother. People only told her to shut up—or even hit her—treating her like a plague.

"She's a freak!"

"It's because of her that we're like this!"

"Yeah, she brought us bad luck and many of us died because of her!"

People simply cursed and kicked the girl while the non-humans did nothing.

"Stop! That hurts! Brother, help me!" she tried to protect herself from the attacks, but no one was willing to help her.

Suddenly, a stone flew toward the group, hitting the head of a man who was attacking the girl and knocking him to the ground.

"Leave her alone and keep moving. Otherwise, your problem will be with me. You disgust me. Just let her get in line and don't touch her again," Madara said from the rooftop after throwing the stone.

The people quickly nodded, picked up the unconscious man, and said nothing else.

The girl remained on the ground crying, writhing in fear. It took her some time to get up after realizing no one else was around.

Madara could find anything in this world—even humans attacking another human just for being different. Even blaming her simply because she was someone they could project their hatred onto.

No wonder Madara had to kill some humans who tried to kill non-humans when they thought the coast was clear. Acting out of revenge, they advanced on non-human women, and Madara had to execute them on the spot.

The girl looked at the other humans to see if anyone would hit her again, but then she followed, keeping a little apart from the line. She curiously watched the hooded people on the rooftops, but at the same time, she looked very afraid.

"Brother..." she kept calling.

"Her name is Bela..." Madara saw the mayor approaching down the street after witnessing the commotion.

"..." Madara said nothing.

"She's famous in the city, for being a hunchback, and as you can see, the humans always treated her like a weird animal."

"The non-humans didn't?" Madara countered, observing how the non-humans had acted—seeming to enjoy the scene of the girl being beaten.

"She was treated like that by everyone, even her own family," he commented, and continued after a pause.

"She was a normal girl until she was five years old. Her parents loved her, but when they saw how their daughter was becoming—her spine twisting and her speech turning strange—being poor, no one could ever find out what happened to her.

After that, all the love she had turned into disgust and hatred. She was only alive because her mother stopped her own father from killing her, but even she didn't love her anymore. I believe she must've thought, many times, how much she regretted that decision—wishing she had a daughter who had died lost in the forest, instead of seeing her live until fifteen like that."

He summarized the story as the girl disappeared into the line, walking alone and slower than anyone else due to her condition. But now, no one mistreated her anymore. Sёarch* The Nôvelƒire.net website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

"Pretty sad..." Madara commented, knowing he shouldn't be surprised—after everything he had witnessed in this world.

"You should know it's normal... people are cruel," the elf replied, with even a drop of sympathy, despite all the misery of that night. He didn't want things to end like this.

"I hope you think about what you're going to do, but I recommend you leave this kingdom. King Henselt won't let this slide—he'll prepare something for you all here after what happened tonight," Madara warned.

The elf nodded seriously.

Kaedwen was no longer safe for non-humans.

Madara, being the original body, activated his Sharingan, looking at the hunchback girl, who walked clumsily toward the gate.

"Just as I thought... she's a source... no wonder she turned out like this at five years old. Her magic corroded her own body," Madara murmured, knowing that children born with magical potential could suffer great deformities. Yennefer was an example—born hunchbacked like the one Madara was watching—and her life had been just as unhappy.

"Brother..."

Some time later, the hunchback girl was walking through the woods, following her brother, completely dirty from the beatings she had received.

"Sister, I've thought it over, and we'll go this way. We'll be safer here," the boy said in a calmer tone.

The girl nodded. Her brother was all she had now. Everyone else hated her. Even if her brother had never treated her well—had even hit her—he was still her brother.

"But aren't we going too far from the others?" she asked cautiously.

It had been ten minutes since they started walking through the forest, after her brother had called her aside once she finally found him on the road, walking with the others who were moving away from the city.

"Shut up and just follow me!" he said in an angry tone. The girl shrank back.

"I think here's good..." he said after walking another 200 meters.

"Brother, there's nothing here..." she murmured, seeing they were in an empty spot with only her brother's torch lit.

"Sorry... but our parents should've killed you a long time ago. Since they're dead... I'll do it here. For them," he said suddenly, his voice cold, as he pulled out a knife he had taken in case he had to fight non-humans.

He had no one else to take his hatred out on now. Maybe killing that freak who had lived by his side his whole life, always making him feel disgust just by existing—maybe now it was time to deal with her once and for all.

"Brother?" the hunchbacked girl murmured, trying to back away as she saw her brother approaching with a knife.

"This is for everything—all the bad things that happened in our life are your fault. Now die!" he exclaimed, lunging at her.

But before he could get any closer, something leapt out from the shadows of the forest and pounced on the boy with a growl.

"AHHH!!!!" her brother screamed with all his strength as he was devoured by a werewolf that had emerged from the forest.

The hunchbacked girl froze, then quickly tried to run away in fear. Her legs felt like they weighed 20 kilos each in that moment, but she forced herself to move, glancing one last time at her brother.

"Help me!! AHHHH!!!" he screamed to his sister.

Even though she didn't want to see him die, fear overwhelmed her. She ran.

Suddenly, behind her, there was a sound—like a wounded puppy's cry. But she didn't look back. She just kept running, leaving any trail she'd followed, sprinting into the dark forest until she found herself at the edge of a river.

She couldn't swim.

Her gaze returned to the darkness behind her—the torch her brother had held was already out.

She didn't know what to do. Die by drowning… or by the monster? She began to cry, convinced that death was moments away.

"The werewolf has already been dealt with," a voice said.

She jumped at the sound. Someone approached from the trees, holding a torch. Startled, she turned to flee, stumbled, and fell—rolling into the river.

"!!!" she exclaimed, as the current began to carry her away.

But just as she was being swept downstream, someone grabbed her hand.

Madara pulled her from the water and threw her over his back. Calmly, he walked across the surface of the river, carrying her as she coughed and gasped, soaked and shaking.

"Who... You're one of those scary men..." she murmured, looking up at him, trying to move away in fear.

To her, he was more frightening than any human or non-human. She thought he would kill her too.

"Yes... you can call me the Leader of the Akatsuki," Madara replied. "Either way, I doubt you'll survive for long with the humans. And after they see your brother is missing—or find what's left of him—they'll blame you."

He looked at her as the shock returned to her face, her brother's death playing over in her mind.

"Do you want to go back to the humans?" he asked.

"What do you mean...?" she said weakly.

"I have a proposal for you," Madara said from behind his mask.

"One that can change your life."
